Many UK carriers charge more to deliver to certain postcodes. The usual ones are the Scottish Highlands and Islands, Northern Ireland, the Isle of Man and the Channel Islands. The exact list differs from carrier to carrier.

The cost rarely shows up when the order is placed. A customer in Inverness pays your standard delivery rate, and the parcel goes on your default service. The surcharge then appears on your carrier invoice weeks later. If your shipping rules only check weight and country, every one of those orders slips through.

Zenstores Shipping Rules check the postcode on every order the moment it imports, before anyone starts picking. The same destination conditions route your international orders too, with customs documentation generated automatically from your product data. For wider ways to cut costs by service and packaging, see how to save money on shipping.

  1. Find which postcodes each of your carriers charges extra for

Start with each carrier's own surcharge list. Prefixes like IV, KW, HS, ZE and BT appear often, along with the Isle of Man (IM) and the Channel Islands (GY, JE). Lists differ between DPD, Evri and others, and some only cover part of a postcode area. Write down the exact prefixes for each carrier, then check how often you actually ship there.

  2. Size the problem from last month's carrier invoices

Pull your most recent carrier invoices and find the surcharge lines. Count how many orders were affected and what they added up to. This shows which areas cost you most, and which carrier is charging for them. Those figures decide where a different service is worth setting up.

  3. Choose the service each surcharge area should go on

For each area, compare the surcharge against sending those orders on another service. That might be a different carrier that doesn't surcharge the area, or your current carrier's own service for it, such as DPD Two Day. Note any weight limits, because they decide how many rules you need.

  4. Zenstores applies the right service by postcode zone

In Zenstores, build a Shipping Rule for each surcharge area. Add a postcode zone condition with the prefixes from step one, then set the service you chose. Stack a weight condition where needed, so heavier parcels to the same postcodes go on a different service. Zenstores applies rules in the priority order you set, so your postcode rules run before your standard UK rule.

  5. Test with sample addresses before printing shipping labels

Create a few test orders with addresses in each surcharge area, at different weights. Check the carrier and service Zenstores has allocated to each one before you print. Once they match, every new order to those postcodes goes on the right service as it imports. Nobody needs to check the address at dispatch.

Zenstores has been great for our business. Saves loads of time, a few clicks and voila labels are printed.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which postcodes usually attract out-of-area surcharges?

It depends on the carrier, so check each carrier's own list before building your Zenstores rules. Common areas include the Scottish Highlands (IV, KW), the Hebrides (HS), Shetland (ZE), Northern Ireland (BT), the Isle of Man (IM) and the Channel Islands (GY, JE). Some carriers also surcharge the Isle of Wight and the Isles of Scilly.

Do I have to stop using my main carrier for the rest of the UK?

No. A Zenstores Shipping Rule only applies when an order matches every condition in it. Your postcode rules catch the surcharge areas, and every other order carries on through your standard rules with your main carrier.

What about parcels too heavy for the service I've chosen?

Zenstores lets you add a weight condition alongside the postcode zone in the same rule. Set one rule for parcels under the service's weight limit and a second for heavier ones, each with its own service. Zenstores reads contents weight and total weight as separate fields, so match the one your carrier charges on.

What happens when a carrier changes its surcharge list?

Update the postcode zone in the relevant Zenstores Shipping Rule. Every new order follows the change from then on. Check your rules against the carrier's list whenever it publishes new terms.

How long does it take to set up postcode rules in Zenstores?

Most businesses have their Zenstores shipping rules live within a day. The Zenstores team migrates your existing rules from your current platform and connects your carriers. You then add postcode rules on top rather than starting again.
