How do ecommerce businesses meet the EU's new product ID rules before November 2026?
From 1 November 2026, the EU requires a product-level identifier, such as a barcode, EAN, GTIN or ISBN, on the customs declaration for every B2C shipment entering its territory. Zenstores lets you add these identifiers to your products now and applies them automatically to the correct customs fields on Royal Mail and Parcelforce forms, so shipments clear without delay.
The EU has been tightening its customs requirements for cross-border ecommerce all year. The €3 customs duty that came into effect on 1 July 2026 removed the exemption that let low-value parcels enter duty-free, and it won't be the last change businesses need to plan for.
From 1 November 2026, every B2C shipment entering the EU needs a product-level identifier on its customs declaration. A generic product description is no longer enough. Depending on the product, this means a SKU, barcode, EAN, GTIN or ISBN, and customs officials use it to check what's actually in the parcel.
Businesses that store this data inconsistently, or don't hold it at all, tend to discover the gap only when a shipment gets held at the border. By then the order is delayed, the customer is chasing a delivery date, and someone is digging through a spreadsheet trying to find a barcode that was never recorded.
Zenstores lets you add these identifiers to your products now, ahead of the deadline. If you're on Shopify and already hold the data there, it imports automatically the next time you run a product import, and Zenstores populates the correct customs field on every shipment from that point on.
You add barcodes, EANs or GTINs to your products in Zenstores
Add the correct product identifier against each product in your Zenstores catalogue. This can be a barcode, EAN, GTIN or ISBN, depending on what your product type carries.
Shopify product data imports automatically
If you hold this data in Shopify already, it comes across automatically the next time you run a product import. There's no need to enter it twice.
Zenstores maps each identifier to the right customs field
Zenstores reads the identifier against the product and maps it into the correct field for the carrier you're using. On Royal Mail and Parcelforce customs forms, this appears as the Manufacturer Product ID.
The identifier applies automatically at dispatch
When you dispatch an EU order, Zenstores pulls the identifier through onto the customs declaration without any manual entry. Nothing extra to do at the point of shipping.
Your EU shipments clear customs without delay
From 1 November 2026, EU customs requires a product identifier on every B2C declaration. With the identifier already in place, your shipment has what it needs to clear, rather than getting held up at the border.
Zenstores has also enabled us to reopen EU and US shipping.
Frequently asked questions
What happens if a product doesn't have a barcode, EAN or ISBN?
EU customs allows a declared exception where no standardised identifier exists for a product. Zenstores flags this so your declaration still includes the required field, rather than leaving it blank.
Does this apply to orders sold through marketplaces like eBay and Amazon, or just Shopify?
It applies to any B2C order dispatched to the EU, regardless of which sales channel it came from. Add the identifier to the product once in Zenstores and it applies to every order for that product, no matter where it was sold.
Is this the same as the €3 customs duty that started on 1 July 2026?
No, they're separate changes. The €3 duty removed the previous exemption for low-value EU parcels, while the product identifier requirement is a data rule that starts on 1 November 2026 and applies regardless of order value.
